Among otheroffices, he served as one of the members of the originalBoard of Trustees of the village; was one of the firstaldermen and president of the Common Council of thecity; was a member and for five years president of theHoard of Water Commissioners, and several times rep-resented the town in the Board of Supervisors of West-chester County. While he was a decided Republicanin sentiment, his patriotism was confined by no partylimits, and, during the War of the Rebellion, he gaveto the government and to the agencies set on foot tomitigate the horrors of warfare his undivided andhearty support. In financial enterprises he w as alwaysa leader, never bold to rashness, and never so cautiousas to endanger success. He was a director of the First. YONKERS. 39 National Bank from its inception, and was the presi-dent of the Yonkers Savings-Bank from its incorpora-tion to the time of his death. Many of the churches, even those with which hewas not otherwise connected, were the recipients ofsubstantial help at his hands; and it may safely besaid that no appeal for a cause that he regarded as de-serving was ever addressed to him without meetingwith a prompt and generous response. Soon after hiscoming to Yonkers he joined in the efforts that led tothe establishment of the Reformed (then the. ReformedDutch) Church. A few years later, when the increaseof the population of the place justified the organizationof the First Presbyterian Church, he entered with hisaccustomed energy into the enterprise, and became thelargest giver, as well as one of the soundest of large contributions in m
