Along the upper edge, which passes overthe shoulders, the strings have been rolledtogether into ropes as thick as the finger,and then plaited so as to form a thick andsoft border which will not hurt the portion of the mat which comes betweenthe edge and the first row of tassels is orna-mented with scraps of scarlet wool plaitedinto the weft. This wool is a favorite thoughcostly ornament to the natives, being pro-cured from seamens woollen caps, whichthey unpick, and the yarns used to ornamentthe dress. One of these mantles brought from NewZealand by Stiverd Yores, Esq., is adornedvery largely with scarlet wool.
