It is exceedinglydangerous to try to thaw dynamite in front of an open fire, or in hotsand, or on hot stones, or metal or steam pipes, or in an oven. It isin attempting to thaw dynamite in some of these ways that accidentsfrequently happen. It is also dangerous to thaw dynamite by puttingit in hot water or by turning a jet of steam on it, and besides both ofthese make it practically useless for blasting. The thawing of dynamite should always be done slowly andcarefully. This makes it tedious work and the fact that but littlethawing is often necessary when using Red Cross Dynamite makesthat brand of great advantage to the farmer. Hercules Dynamite andHercules Gelatin Dynamite usually have to be thawed when the tem-perature is lower than 45 F. or 50^ F., but they are used only inblasting ditches through wet ground, and in sinking wells, so if thiswork is done in summer and Red Cross Dynamite is used for all otherblasting, but httle thawing will be necessary. 18 ELECTRIC BLASIING. BLASTING STUMPS ELECTRICALLY BLASTING BY ELECTRICITY Large boulders and large stumps with spreading roots can oftenbe blown out and broken up more thoroughly and with less dynamiteif it is distributed in several charges in different places under theboulder or stump and all of these charges exploded at one of stumps standing close together can also be blasted bestin this way. In order to dig a ditch satisfactorily in light, dry soil, with dynamite, it is nearly always necessary to also explode a num-ber of charges simultaneously. In well sinking and other kinds ofblasting it is of advantage to explode a number of charges at onetime, as each tends to help the other. The only way in which severalcharges some distance apart can be exploded at exactly the sametime is by the electric method of blasting. Electric blasting may, ofcour
