(Am. Ry. Eng. Assn.) Fig. 57 shows a steel tie taken from the track that had been in service fouryears. Very little rust was found on the web of the tie and the bottom flangeof this tie showed very little corrosion. There were no signs whatever of thetie failing in any respect. The cutting of the slots or holes in the web of the tie,as shown in the figure, has been abandoned, as it was found that with slag orstone ballast the holes with the web turned out were not necessary in order tokeep the track from sliding sideways. SUPPORTS OF THE 93 The tie was smooth on the upper face where the base of the rail rests andshowed very httle, if any, wear. Providing the wear in years to come is nogreater in proportion than it has been during the past four years, the tie wouldbe good for 25 or 30 years.
