Mainly active from1750s but evidence of workings goes back to Roman Times and earlier. During 18th and 19th centuries mine provided most of the world with copper from open cast pits and small scale underground workings. Provided employment for 1000s of people until 1904 and copper notably for the sheathing of Nelson's fleet of ships as well as flagship, The Victory. Now the mine is in the process of being rexplored and opened up again.
