Storm research. Scientist studies weather maps whilst planning an aircraft flight which will form part of the FASTEX (Fronts & Atlantic Storm Tracks Experiment) programme. Yellow areas on these maps represent the starting points of low-pressure weather systems (cyclones). The FASTEX study is designed to discover what factors turn a normal cyclone into a storm, and to use these in computer models to improve weather forecasting. FASTEX aircraft measure the patterns of wind, rain, temperature & humidity around them. They can also drop disposable weather stations (dropsondes) and monitor their radio transmissions.
