Muscle wasting. Hand of a 71-year-old man showing wasting of the interosseous muscles due to ulnar neuritis. This results from damage to the ulnar nerve, which controls movement of the fingers and thumb. The metacarpal bones of the palm appear unusually prominent due to loss of muscle tissue between them, with the large muscle at the base of the thumb (thenar prominence) being especially affected.
