'Virginia Marylandia et Carolina'. Virginia Maryland Carolina. HOMANN, c1720 map

Artist/engraver/cartographer: Johann Christoph Homann / Homann Heirs. Provenance: The map was extracted from a composite atlas of early 18th century maps, the latest of which was dated c1754. Type: Large antique 18th century atlas map, printed on thick, good quality paper with original hand colour/color and decorative title cartouche. The map shows the British colonies along the Atlantic seaboard of what is now the United States, from slightly south of Cape Fear north to Long Island or "Jork Shire [York Shire]" as it is marked on the map. The map covers the present-day states of New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia and North Carolina. The Shire of York (Yorkshire), was the first large governmental unit organized in the English Province of New York soon after English control of the area was established in 1664. Philadelphia is shown, and many other settlements are indicated.
