Newton's catadioptric telescope. 17th-century diagrams showing the optics and alignment of the lenses in the new catadioptric telescope proposed by English physicist Isaac Newton (1642-1727). This telescope combines both refraction (using lenses) and reflection (using mirrors). Newton carried out much research in the field of optics, having built the first practical reflecting telescope in 1668. These diagrams were published in 1672 in issue 81, volume 7 of the journal 'Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society'.
