The Turnpike, a two-storey building with a distinctive rounded external stair tower, dates from 1686 and is thought to have originally been a merchant's house. The Fisher Biggins area, of which Shore Street is a part, is the oldest of Thurso. The Turnpike was sketched by the Lancashire-born artist Lowry.
