This painting, titled Ethel, was done in 1898 by the English artist Ralph Peacock and exhibited that same year at the Royal Academy. Peacock caught the subtle charm of girlhood of Ethel Brignall and pictured it in a singularly charming manner. This girl is the younger of the two girls in "The Sisters" (exhibited 2 years later). Peacock married Ethel's sister Edith. Peacock often used the wooden panelling as a backdrop for his works focused on children.
