Subse-quently he entered the Provi-dence conference seminary atEast Greenwich, R. I., and therestudied music and art. In 1863he entered the oflice of the En-field manufacturing company,and remained with them until1866, when his health broke downas a result of too close applicationto business as assistant superin-tendent, and it was necessary forhim to engage in a lighter busi-ness. He engaged in the insurancebusiness in the states of Vermontand Massachusetts, with offices at Montpelier andPittsfield. In 1874 he entered the College of physi-cians and surgeons, in New York, and previous tohis graduation paid especial attention to the diseasesof the eye and ear, under the direction of the re-nowned oculist. Dr. C. R. Agnew. He was gradu-ated in medicine from the College of physicians and. surgeons in 1877, and was immediately elected as-sistant surgeon of the Manhattan eye and ear hos-pital. In April of the same year he opened anoffice for the practice of his specialty in New York,and has remained in that city ever since. He hasbeen surgeon to the Northeastern dispensary, andphysician to the dispensary of the Church of theHoly Trinity, and at present is assistant to the Man-hattan eye and ear hospital, lecturer to the NewYork city board of education; member of the NewYork county medical society, of the Society for theprotection of widows and orphans of med
