In 1891 the Cog-Wheel Railway beganoperation, running directly from Manitou tothe summit, and accomplishing that feat in adistance of nine miles. The steepest grade onthe road is one foot in four. It starts near theIron Springs, at the mouth of EngelmannsCaiion, and makes the round trip in four and ahalf hours, allowing a stop of forty minutes onthe peak.
