PEARL HARBOR, HI (August 19, 2018)- Personnel from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center had the opportunity to fly with the NOAA P-3C Orion Hurricane Hunter aircraft out of Pearl Harbor, HI, into the approaching Hurricane Lane (14E). While flying several routes both around and through the hurricane, Hurricane Hunter aircraft deployed dropsondes and vertical radar to measure atmospheric parameters and storm structure, providing real-time information to forecasters. Atmospheric data is also ingested into numerical weather models, improving forecast accuracy. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center is responsible for repackaging the Central Pacific Hurricane Center's warnings on Central Pacific tropical cyclones, including Hurricane Lane, for use by the many Department of Defense bases and assets in Hawaii. Surface ships, submarines, and aircraft sortied in advance of Hurricane Lane approaching the Hawaiian islands. Though Hurricane Lane did not make landfall, it brought torrential rain, flash flooding, and landslides, with the greatest impacts on Maui and the Big Island.
