The bestway to get rid of this pest (see fig. 29) i6 topinch the maggots to be found in the leaves, and remove the leaves which are very badlyattacked, burning them. Afterwards you canmake the plants distasteful to the flies by sy-ringing them with Quassia extract, thus pre-venting them laying their eggs on the leaves,or you may scatter soot, lime, etc., on theleaves whilst they are damp. Feed theplants liberally, and flood them with wateror manure water during dry weather. Whenthe crop has been lifted, trench the ground, and bury the top spit deeply so that the fliesthen in the pupal stage will be unable to getthrough the depth of soil. If the attack hasbeen very bad apply a little fresh gas-lime tothe soil, and fork this in to the depth of 4. The soil is infectedwith the fungus Botrytis. No certain cure isknown for this disease, but good resultshave been obtained from spraying the plantsearly in the spring with a weak solution ofpotassium sulphide. iSome growers have liftedthe bulbs and kept them in flowers of sulphurfor th(e winter, with a view to destroying thefungu6. If your plants are very badlyaffected, however, we would advise you toburn them, and procure fresh stock from anuncontaminated source, planting the bulbs ina fresh situation, as far from the old 6ite ascircumstances will allow.
