In April 1988, the 45th Anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, a stone monument, resembling an open freight car, was unveiled at 10 Stawki Street, to mark the Umschlagplatz or place of deportation to the Treblinka Death Camp for the residents of the Warsaw Ghetto, beginning in July 1942. The inscription on four commemorative plaques, in Polish, Yiddish, English and Hebrew reads: 'Along this path of suffering and death, over 300,000 Jews were driven 1940-1943 from the Warsaw Ghetto to the gas chambers of the Nazi extermination camps.' 448 of the most popular Polish-Jewish names, in alphabetical order, from Aba to Zanna, are also engraved on the monument. Each name commemorates 1000 ghetto victims. On the south side of Stawki Street (right background) is the former SS Headquarters Building, now the Department of Psychology of Warsaw University. The buildings on the north side, now used as schools again, acted as a Jewish hospital. In 1942, Jews were detained here before their deportation to the extermination camp at Treblinka. A memorial plaque, with inscriptions in Polish and Hebrew, reads: 'The school and temporary hospital building served the detention of Jews before deportation to Treblinka.' Imprisoned Jews from Hungary and Greece were releaed from this building by soldiers of the Home Army after a fight with SS troops at the start of the Warsaw Uprising 1 August 1944.'
