Houghton le Spring Primary Care Centre is the first healthcare building in the UK to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Outstanding’, going beyond the Department of Health’s requirement of an ‘Excellent’ rating for all new buildings. Like previous schemes designed by P+HS in conjunction with South of Tyne NHS, Houghton collocates NHS services with Local Authority Social Services and Health and Leisure facilities. The site is located close to the town centre and adjacent to an existing leisure centre, which has been comprehensively refurbished as part of the wider development. The physical adjacency of the Health and Leisure facilities highlights the link between healthy lifestyle and well being. The new building is accessed via a two storey atrium opening onto a café and reception hub with touch screen health information point.
