Dming the time that the com was in the ves- sel a large propor- tion of it became hot, discolored, moldy, and badly damaged. The corn changed the most in condition and be- came badly damag- ed in the upper part of the holds. The temperature and degree of deteriora- tion, in a general way, decreased from the surface of the corn toward the bot- tom of the holds. It will be seen in the accompanying charts tliat the temperature of the corn reached 100° F. in the followijig num})cr of days after sailing. Tliroe days in hold 2, 4^ days in hold 3, 8 days in hold 5, 16 days in hold 6. As has already been stated, the average length of time that the corn remaijied in tlic vessel was 39 days. 25 TO -f3 50 TO 74- 75 TO 99 IOOto /24 /as TO 149 25 TO 4-9 SO TO 74- 75 TO 99 IOOto ISA- laS TO 149 \94.
