The first division represents a number of personsas if engaged in deep council, and holding conversationin second division exhibits an army of 02 MORAYSHIRE horse and foot on the march, the cavalry being in thevan and at full gallop, the infantry following with >*¥» & & A ^ ^ vL Mi m *<w*. Swenos Stone, Forres spears in their hands and shields. In the third divisionare appearances of a battle—The fourth division shows ANTIQUITIES 03 a number of captives bound together,... while a row ofwarriors above, with unsheathed swords, are shouting victory The other, or north side of the stone, has only three divisions. Below are two figures, with humanheads, though their bodies are of rather grotesque forms,typical perhaps of priests, bending over something as if in an attitude of prayer In the division above is a long cross, the arms at the top being within a circle. Whatparticular event, if any, the stone was erected to com-memorate remains, and is likely to remain, a mystery. The Roman Well or bath at Burghead is a cisternhewn out of the solid rock. Its four sides are fully 10 feetin height, and the basin is rather more than 4 feet indepth. Steps lead down to the basin. As it has neverbeen proved that the Romans gained a permanent footingon the shores of the Moray
