Dysprosium-containing hard disk drive. Computer hard drives are used to read and record data on magnetic materials. The magnetic storage media takes the form of platters that rotate at high speed with the head (mounted on the arm at lower left) reading and writing data. It is the surface coating of the platters that incorporate the lanthanide element dysprosium (Dy). This element compounds such as dysprosium oxide have high magnetic susceptibility, making them suitable for such uses.
