Rookes Evelyn Bell Crompton (1845-1940), British electrical engineer, industrialist and inventor. Crompton developed steam engines during his army commission in India (1864-75). Back in the UK, he worked on dynamos and arc lamps. He was a life-long advocate of direct current (DC) electrical supplies. Crompton was President of the Institution of Electrical Engineers in 1895 and 1908. Crompton worked on standardisation with the International Electrotechnical Commission (1906).
