Bai marble, China. Close-up of a stork-design (head at upper right) produced on a plate of Caihua marble, a subtype of Dali marble. The marble has been quarried and then cut and polished by Bai craftsmen to produce this bird-shape. The stork is a symbol of long life for the Chinese, and a poem has been added at upper left. The Bai people are an ethnic minority population in China, mostly living in the area in and around Dali City and Erhai Lake, in China's south-western Yunnan Province. The production of Dali marble is a major industry for the Bai people.
