Skinner and Robert of the Ogden CityStreet Railway have been at work for several years onan electric brake and have now got it in successful oper-ation on one of the Ogden cars. It is a solenoid brake. CONTROLLER FOR ELECTRIC BRAKE. operated from the trolley current but the controller forthe brake has contacts so that in case of emergency whenthe trolley comes off the brake may be applied by themotors acting as dynamos. The solenoid, which takesthe place of the air cylinder on an air brake is a coil andplunger with coil 3 inches inside diameter and windings2 inches thick. Its length is 24 inches. The magneticcircuit is made complete by putting an iron case aroundthe coil. This is essential to the success of the next important detail is the auxiliary device for keep-ing the brake set without use of current. A small mag- net works a clutch which can be released or set by themovement of the controller handle from one point to an-other, so that except when the brake is being drawntighter no current is used.
