Carrickfergus seafront and Carrickfergus Castle


The seafront promenade and the castle at Carrickfergus on Belfast Lough in County Antrim. A popular seaside town a few miles north east of Belfast. Carrickfergus Castle Ireland's best preserved Norman fortification construction of Carrickfergus Castle was begun by John de Courcy after he conquered eastern Ulster in 1177. Holding a strategic position on a rocky promontory, mostly surrounded by the sea, the castle commanded Belfast Lough, and the land approaches into the walled town of Carrickfergus. The castle had an eventful and turbulent history, the adjoining harbour was also the location where, William of Orange landed in Ireland at on 14 June 1690 on his way to defeat James II at the Battle of the Boyne on 12 July the same year.
