Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Short-nosed cattle louse (Haematopinus eurysternus). It is a louse found around the cattle's eyes and in the long hair around the neck and tail. In heavy infestations it can occur anywhere in the cattle's hair coat. It is a common external parasite (sucking louse) of cattle that can cause serious damage if it occurs in high frequency. Cattle will lick, scratch and rub affected areas excessively. Anaemia can occur with increasing chances of other infectious diseases. Eggs are laid in egg cases that are attached to the body hair. Magnification: x10 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
