The limb stiffened, and, unable to get into thewagon, he made his bed for nearly four weeks under abush, the rip healing rapidly, covered with a rag kept con-stantly wet. As soon as he was sufficiently recovered he hurrieddown to the Cape, where an official announcement awaitedhim that in the event of his failing to return to India bya certain date, then two months past, his appointmentwould be cancelled.
