Male similar to female, but wing membrane, especially in anal area, more heavily tinted; apical spot slighdy broader; tri- angular poUinose area on frontoclypeus reaches halfway to level of frontoclypeal pits. The combination of a tinted wing membrane and brown wing pattern which does not completely cover the discal cell should separate this species from any other likely to be found in Illinois. The larva of this species is unknown. C. luteopennis is a rarely collected species of Chrysops known from only five localities in the north-central states and in southern Ontario (Fig. 133). Eventually it may be found in Illinois near Lake Rg. 133.—Distribution of Chrysops luteopennis in North America. Chrysops macquarti Philip Chrysops macquarti Phihp (1961:161).
