Spitfire RW388 aeroplane on display at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs, England, UK


The Spitfire RW388 aeroplane was donated to Stoke-on-Trent Museum in 1972 to honour the city’s connection to aeroplane designer Reginald This Spitfire was built in Castle Bromwich in May 1945. It is a Spitfire Mark XVI (16) with shortened, ‘clipped’ wings and an engine tuned for lower altitudes. The aeroplane last flew in 1952 when it was damaged during take-off at RAF Middle Wallop, Hampshire. It spent time as a ‘gate guardian’ outside RAF bases before being donated to Stoke-on-Trent in 1972 in honour of designer Reginald Mitchell who was born in Butt Lane, Kidsgrove, Stoke-on-Trent.
