These qualities endear the Schipperke as acanine companion, with a quaint and lovablecharacter; and he is also a capital vermindog. When properly entered he cannotbe surpassed as a ratter. Schipperkes have always been kept aswatch-dogs on the Flemish canal barges, and that, no doubt, is the origin of thename, which is the Flemish for LittleSkipper, the syllable ke forming thediminutive of schipper ; the schis pronounced as in school. Joachim, and the two others byMr. G. R. Krehl.
