During the past ten years, many narratives have beenpublished, detailing the sufferings of Federal prisoners inthe late War of the Rebellion. They have, for the mostpart, been confined to accounts of the personal experienceof the writers in the several prisons in which they wereconfined, and many of them exhibit vivid pictures of thehorrible condition to which they were reduced by thepolicy of their captors. The following narratives furnish a more complete ac-count of prison life than any which have been heretoforepresented to the public, by combining the stories of thehardships endured by officers and by private soldiers re-spectively. They were prepared for the press many yearsago, while the incidents related were still fresh in thememory, and while the unfortunate writers were stillsmarting underprisonersofwarmi00isha
