In 1807 he was chosen chief justiceof the State, but on account of his health was obliged to decline tlieoffice. He continued to be a member of the council, however, until theclose of his life. He died in Windsor, Nov. 20, 1807, aged sixty-fiveyears, greatly regretted, as in his life he liad been admired for hisextraordinary endowments, his accomplishments as an advocate, hisintegrity as a judge, his patriotism as a legislator and ambassador, andhis exemplariness as a Christian.
