ALTHOUGH in 1881 there were still living in Bed-minster some who had been members of one of theold defunct Societies, it is to none of these thatthe Bedminster Industrial Society owes its origin. The pioneer was Mr. William jMillard, who had been amember of the Highbury Coleford Society before comingto work at the South Liberty Colliery. By the rules ofthat Society he was not permitted to hold shares withouttrading; and, as the Store was too far away to permitof his doing duty in this respect, in due course hisinvestment, amounting to between £30 and £40, mostlyaccumulated dividend and interest, was sent to , Mr. Millard had been trying to work upenthusiasm amongst his friends at the pit, with a \-ic;wto starting operations on the spot.
