Hartley Wintney Hampshire Tuesday 18th May 2016 Fire Crews Battle Church Blaze in Hartley Wintney after Church Gardener sets fire to shed and than burns down the church Fire crews from around the county this evening battling to stop the spread of a fire in Hartley Wintney. Crews from six stations are currently dealing with the incident that has been described as a well developed fire and has spread to the roof of the Catholic Church of St Thomas More, in Mount Pleasant. Crews were called just before six this evening to mount pleasant to deal with a shed that had caught alight and spread to a neighbouring church. The roof of the church has been 100% damaged by the fire. Crews attending manged to with the help of residents in the village remove the pews and internal furniture from within the church. One Resident attempted to put the fire out with a garden hose after attempted by the church gardener failed to extinguishe flames using a watering can. The gardener also received burns to his and was treated by South Central Ambulance Service A number of firefighters in breathing apparatus are attempting to fight the fire that had spread to the roof to the church and carry out recover work within the building. It is believed that the fire started in a bin and spread to the shed and then on to the church @UKNIP
