Dinslaken, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany - Emscher estuary into the Rhine. On the right is the disused STEAG coal-fired power plant at Voerde. The mouth of the Emscher into the Rhine is being relocated from Dinslaken almost 500 metres to the north to Voerde. Fish will then be able to swim barrier-free up the new Emscher from the Rhine through a newly created floodplain. Following the construction of a parallel sewer, the Emscher will be completely free of sewage from January 2022. The river was previously an open, above-ground combined sewer with rainwater and wastewater.
