Institute for European Ethnology of the Humboldt University of Berlin, Mohrenstrasse 40/41, Mitte Berlin. Columned façade, Moorish Collonades from Old Berlin Fortress. The Moor colonnades (Mohrenkolonnaden) are a cultural monument in Mohrenstrasse, built in the 18th century on the bridge over the moat. The architectural style of the sandstone colonnades shows the influences of between baroque and classicism. The Moat was part of the fortifications of Old Fortress Berlin and the colonnades were completed by 1787 on behalf of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm II. The Commission was carried out by architect Carl Gotthard Langhans and builder Christian Friedrich Becherer. Old Berlin had five similar bridge structures but only the Moorish colonnades have been preserved at the original location. The Royal Colonnades were moved to Kleistpark in 1911, part of Spittel colonnades have been preserved but relocated and the colonnades on the Mühlendammbrücke and Jägerbrücken no longer exist. The colonnades were damaged during WWll but were restored in the 1950s and redeveloped in the 1990s.
