Strong serviceable guns, with first-class shoot-ing, can be had with the cheapest form of breech-actions for twenty guineas, and with the hammer-less ejector from forty guineas. Single 8-bores are made with the same styles ofbreech-actions as described above. The barrels aremade 36in. in length, and the guns weigh fromI2lbs. to I5lbs., and the prices range from fifteenguineas, according to the breech-action used. Double 8-bore guns are frequently built, and arepopular with expert wild-fowlers. These shouldhave the barrels not longer than 36in. when theyweigh about I5lbs., or 13 Jibs, to I4lbs., with barrels And How to Use It, 39. ;3O w Q 40 The Breech-Loader^ two inches shorter, and only I2lbs. with barrels32 inches long. The charge varies from 6 to 7 dramsof powder, and the standard charge of shot is2\ ounces, which should not be exceeded unlessvery large swan shot is used. Such guns can bemade considerably lighter if they are intended tobe used with a smaller charge of shot. Double8-bore guns cost £^ 5s. more than 12-bores ofcorresponding styles and qualities. They are fullchoke, and the thin brass or Perfect cases arerecommended in preference to all others for gunsof 8 and 4-bore. These cases take the large chargesbetter, and it will be found generally advantageousto use black gunpowder only ; better results accruethan from the use of any nitro-compound, and it issafer, as heavy loads of shot increase the strengthdeveloped by nitro-compounds to such an extentthat black gunpowder is preferable, even on thescore of safety alone. Cheap 8-bore guns are notto be recommend
