Chemical industry. Night-time view of the Marchon chemical plant at Whitehaven in Cumbria, UK. This plant produces raw materials and intermediates for the detergents and toileteries industries. It manufactures surfactants (surface cleaning agents) and foaming products which are then used to make domestic cleaning materials, soap, toothpaste, and industrial materials such as cement and foam underlay for carpets. The plant also produces sulphuric acid and hence there is some discharge of sulphur dioxide.
