Cheering survivors greet American troops as the first Allied tanks enter the Mauthausen concentration camp. This photo was a recreation of the actual event which had not been photographed. Mauthausen was a Nazi forced labour camp, part of the Mauthausen complex. At its height it had 85,000 prisoners at any one time. It was infamous for its harshness - it is estimated that of the 190,000 prisoners held there during its operations, fully half died. It was home to the Wiener Graben quarry and its feared Stairs of Death (Todessteige) where many died carrying huge loads up the 186 stone steps.
