A convenient air press which can be made in most anyshop and which has been found particularly serviceable inrod and driving box work, is shown in the illustration. Thecylinder of the press has a diameter of 30 in. The press ismade up of a base 4 in. thick by 47 in. square with a tongue. J,_ j2^{SJ^[/flS Air Press of 70,000 Lb. Capacity on one side 15 in. square. This projection is left on thebase as it enables the operator to get the work on and off thepress easier. Four wrought iron upright columns of are screwed into the base and the top plate of thepress is held to these rods by four 2j4-in. nuts. The air cylinder walls are bolted to the top plate by 201 s-in. bolts. The underside of the top plate is cut awayas indicated in the illustration to permit the top plate fittinginto the cylinder, the upper plate forming the head of thecylinder. A cast iron piston with two packing rings is usedon a 3J/2-in. piston rod. The bottom head of the cylinderis fastened to the wall by 20 l}i-in. bolts. It is stronglyreinforced by six ribs. A suitable packing gland is appliedon this end of the cylinder. It is made of brass and heldin place by two 1-in. studs. The cylinder may be operatedby the regular three-way valve and at 100 lb. air
