Halkirk is the only village in the interior ofthe county. The Orkneys and Shetland Isles (see p. 346) jointly form one county, whosechief town, Kirkicall, lies on Pomona, the mainland of the Orkneys. It is nota town of great population, but in its cathedral of St. Magnus, founded in thetwelfth century, it possesses a unique specimen of Scandinavian architecturenot unlike the cathedral of Trondhjem, in Norway. Stromness, on the westernside of the Mainland, where its scenery is most beautiful, has a natural-historymuseum of some importance. St. Margarets Mope is the principal village onSouth Ronaldsha. Leruick, the capital of the Shetland Islands, has an excellent harbour, but itstrade is less than that of Kirkwall. Amongst its exports figure articles ofhosiery and various woollen stuffs, which the women make in the long winternights.
