Martin Call was a Churchwarden there in 1716. In Alnwick churchyard there is a tombstone to Ann Call, interredthere 12th March 1766, aged twenty-seven, who may have beenanother child, though more probably she might be Ann Millikin, thewife of Thomas Call. Martin Call mentions in his MSS. that he had twelve children, ofwhom the only survivors were Martin, James, and Thomas. Theother children unaccounted for must have been born and died in someof the other places where he CALL HOUSE, ALNW KK THEIR CONNECTIONS AND DESCENDANTS 61 Those mentioned in Martin Calls tree unaccounted for are : Hannah, John, and John Miller; the latter he mentions marriedan Esther Antonia. Of none of these have we found any record norof two others unnamed. Of Martin ii. we have not been able to find any trace, but it isevident if he ever married that his children, if any, died withoutissue. James is referred to in Taits History of Alnwick, and also in Hodgsons Northern Biographies published by the SurteesSociety. He was factor, land steward, and gardener to the Duke ofNorthumberland. The Dukes of Northumberland (Smithsons) atthis period kept up a style almost equal to Royalty, and held Courtsin which pageantry and strictest etiquette were observed.
