Czech Villa, abandoned on the beautiful and strategically important Adriatic island of Vis, near Split, Croatia, historic location of the defeat of Napoleon's forces in 1811 and the Nazis during the Second World War. Partisans sheltered here. Tito's base was a cave in the mountains. The Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Slavs, Venetians, Austrians, French and British have all taken control of Lissa now Vis at different periods. In 1866 Austrian forces triumphed over Italy. The island was at different times under the control of Tito's partisans during WW2 and later became the British Military Mission Headquarters. After the war Vis was a military base with strictly controlled access, not opened to tourism until the summer of1998 . This protection from development left the island unspoilt. It is now a favourite docking point for international yachts and pleasure boats.
