The promontory itself is of the usualformation of the Massachusetts sand beaches, presenting a slightlycurving, regular water-line on the ocean side, while the inner shoresare broken and indented in outline. The width of the promontory isnowhere greater than a few hundred yards, and is usually considerablyless than that, the sand dunes and surfaces arching towards the centralline for the entire length, in a few notable instances rising intohills of commanding altitude; and the spur terminates in a series ofhills and a broadly expanded point at its western extremity.
