Toattack the Argonne frontally would have been sui-(idal, but Marshal Foch and General Pershing con-ceived the idea of going around it by attacking ontwo sides at once. In the American First army, which was com-manded by Lieutenant General Hunter Liggett,were the First and Second divisions of the regulararmy, the rest being National Guard troops.
