It consists chiefly of liquorsanguinis ; and this is altered from the healthy 1 Atony and flaccidity of blood-vessels may become a cause of impediment to a cur-rent through them, not by preventing these vessels from actively contracting on theircontents, but by removing that tone by which the vessels maintain the calibre and thetension best calculated to transmit onwards the force of the current. Vessels thusweak and inelastic, instead of equably conveying the current, become distended, length-ened, and tortuous in receiving it; and by their very mass, as well as by their inelasti-city, they partly break the force of the current, and partly turn it into other Principles of Medicine, p. The fibrin is increased, not only in quantity, but also inplasticity, or tendency to become organized. Increase of exudation may be explained, in part by the Bupposedincrease of vital attraction between the blood and the surroundingparenchyma. Attenuation of the distended coats of the vessels, also, obviously favours escape of their contents. The natural function of the part is not simply exalted, but begins tobe perverted: for example, secretion is not only increased, but changedin its character. By fibrinous interstitial deposit, the texture of thepart is softened and enlarged. The formative power, as it is termed,is disordered; and the supply of plastic material is greater than can beusefully and normally appropriated by the implicated Inother words, nutrition, or the normal and vital relation whi
