Leucocyte. Transmission electron micrograph of a frog leucocyte (white blood cell) showing cell organelles. Taking up much of the lower part of the cell is the nucleus, where genes are stored in the form of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). The black areas contain heterochromatin - DNA that is wound up in an inactive state. Outside the nucleus is the cytoplasm, which appears granular. The oval grey bodies in the cytoplasm are energy-producing mitochondria. Directly above the nucleus is a system of vesicles and membranes called the Golgi apparatus. This packages proteins or lipids produced by the cell for export outside. Magnification x37,500 at 10x8 inch size.
