The trolley pole arrangement gives alatitude of about 11 feet on each side of the wires, each car is equippedwith two motors of 7| horsepower each, and has a carrying capacityof 16 passengers. One man acts both as conductor and motormanfor each car. Considering the large areas and the scattered population ofmany districts, the possibilities for trackless trolley traction seemgreater in the United States than in any other country. We may,therefore, expect that, in the near future, we shall find many installa-tions of this kind here, with such changes from those alreadydescribed as will be found necessary to satisfy special requirements. 401. SELF-PROPELLED RAILWAYCARS The self-propelled railway car appears in the following types:(1) motor velocipedes; (2) section motor cars; (3) inspection cars;(4) locomotives for industrial or shop railways; (5) self-propelled,single-truck passenger coaches; (6) heavy, self-propelled, double-truck passenger coaches.
