Knock Ullinish Iron Age earth house, Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK, looking NE down the surviving stretch of underground gallery some 4m long. The original overall length was probably around 9m with a funnel-shaped entrance at the SW. The passage is around 4ft high, the drystone walls and lintel slabs are made of basalt. Originally used in the Iron Age & Roman periods, possibly as a cool store, the earth house sits in rocky moorland amongst the remains of a post-medieval settlement of 250-100 years ago whose inhabitants probably also used it as a cellar for dairy produce & other perishable goods.
