A block of ice falls off and the vertically sloped glacier tongue of Northwestern Glacier and and hits a rock (third of four photos).
The photo has been taken from a boat on an overcast day in summer. Northwestern Glacier can be found at the head of Northwestern Fjord in Kenai Fjords National Park, just under 30 miles southwest of Seward. The tidewater glacier has been steadily receding over the past century. By the second half of the 20th century, Northwestern Glacier's recession revealed a number of islands in the Fjord that had previously been covered in ice.
