Night-time view of the 15-metre Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope (SEST). This telescope is located at the European Southern Observatory's La Silla site at an elevation of 2400 metres in the southern part of the Atacama desert of Chile. SEST was built in 1987 and decommissioned in 2003. It was a precursor of the APEX and ALMA projects, and was the ESO's first observing site. In the background is ESO's telescope (lower left). The site was chosen because its high elevation and dry air provide excellent viewing conditions. Photograph published in April 2010.
